What is Built Up Roofing?
Commonly known as “tar and gravel” roofing, built up roofing systems (BUR for short) are many layers of bitumen (or tar) and strong fabric materials with a final layer of fine gravel on top, giving it that “tar and gravel” name. A Built Up Roof system is a very durable and sturdy roofing system that’s highly resistant to rough weather like hail and high winds. A BUR roof can also be very energy efficient, as expert roofers can incorporate an insulating layer. Though the technology has been in use for almost a century, it still used in many commercial buildings and residential homes around the world.
Is Built Up Roofing (BUR) Right for My Commercial Property?
A Built Up Roof system is recommended for roofs that have a low slope because it can cover the whole roof in a continuous layer, creating a perfectly waterproofed surface. Because of the many layers, a BUR is highly UV resistant and insulating. However, BURs can also be somewhat heavy, so the roof structure needs to be very sturdy to support it. The top layer being mae of gravel means that a built up roof system is resistant to fire.

How to Install a BUR Roof System
There are two different types of applications of Built Up Roofing systems based on the type of asphalt that is used between the fabric layers, hot or cold. In applying a hot asphalt BUR, the roofers pour liquid asphalt to adhere the special reinforced fabric layers together, but cold asphalt, which gives off less fumes, is applied with a roller or squeegee. A cold asphalt BUR is considered superior because it can be more resistant to temperature changes.
